The advent of the Internet brought about many wonderful things. New ways to digest our favorite forms of entertainment, the ability to communicate with others on a global scale, and of course, new channels for businesses.

But perhaps the biggest advantage the Internet gives today's would-be businesses people is the ability to be themselves and pursue their own interests.

No longer are people confined to their standard 9-to-5 desk jobs. Instead, a select few choose to blaze their own path in hopes of achieving greatness.

This article aims to help you do the same. Wondering how to become an entrepreneur? Here are eight helpful tips to help you get started.

1. Rome Wasn't Built In A Day

Before we go any further, it's important to understand how remarkably long it can take to become an entrepreneur. Yes, working for yourself and pursuing your dreams takes chutzpah and moxie.

But it also takes a whole lot of time and just as much patience.

In fact, the average startup takes about five years to get things up and running. Make sure you're prepared for the massive undertaking that becoming an entrepreneur entails.

Even those behind brands that seemingly pop up overnight have spent years of their lives grinding away at creating a business worthy of attention.

Please, don't let this dissuade you at all, but we want you to have reasonable expectations about your business' timetable.

2. Seek A Strong Mentor

Behind every wonderful business and successful entrepreneur is often tons of support from others behind the scenes. One great way to ensure success is to enlist a bit of outside help and find a mentor.

Seek out someone in your field who admire and establish a point of contact.

Though every market tends to get quite competitive, most established business owners are more than happy to give newcomers a few tips. These tips, as innocuous and small as they may seem, may serve as the stepping stones for your business.

One part friend and one part guide, a mentor can help connect you with the right people, as well. Networking is a huge part of the business world, after all.

So no matter how lofty it may seem, send that email or make that call. You never know who could get back to you.

3. Have Emergency Finances In Place

Since establishing yourself takes a great deal of time, we'd be remiss if we didn't recommend having some sort of financial plan in place. Becoming an entrepreneur involves a great deal of stress.

There are going to be a lot of hard weeks where you eat almost nothing but ramen, but with the right plan, you can keep your business afloat while still living a good life.

4. Study The Past

In order to have a successful future, you'll have to start by looking into the past. Fortunately, the Internet is once again here to save the day.

It's now easier than ever to study the failures and successes of the past and learn lessons from business' greatest leaders.

As Harry Truman once said, "Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers".

No general would go to war without an understanding of strategy and history, nor should you start a business without understanding fundamental concepts and theories.

So pick up a book or simply research your favorite business person and truly study them. See what sets them apart from the thousands upon thousands of other entrepreneurs out there. Then, ingrain these lessons into your business practices.

5. Find The Right Business

In part, much of your success will depend upon the avenue you choose. Before you commit to a particular business or field, consider a few factors.

First, is now the right time to get into this business? You wouldn't want to join a popular market just as the trend begins to die down.

Next, ask yourself why this particular market is the perfect fit for you. Having a justification may not seem like a necessity, but it can keep you grounded and help you remember why you're choosing the field.

Finally, ask yourself about the potential longevity of your field. Once again, timing plays a big part in the success or failure of certain businesses.

You wouldn't expect to see a one-hour photo store these days, as an example. Technology and time can cause major disruptions, so make sure you're on the right side of the bubble.

6. Understand Your Audience

It certainly makes sense that a business owner should understand his or her clientele. But so many newcomers make the mistake of having a general demographic in place and hoping for the best.

This is akin to blindfolding yourself and throwing darts at a board. Though it's true you could hit something, you're limiting your potential for success.

Don't just know who your customers are, know everything about them.

Who are they? What types of entertainment do they like? Where do they shop? How do they talk?

The more you know, the better you can target your business or product toward that market.

7. Create Your Future Today

Benjamin Franklin put it best when he said (and we're paraphrasing here) that those who fail to plan are planning to fail. Your future success requires small, actionable steps taken today informed by clear, well-researched tactics.

Long term goals are a great way to get started but don't get so caught up that you put the cart before the horse. You'll want to come up with immediate, short-term plans to set yourself up for success, as well.

8. Embrace Feedback

If you want to be your own boss, you should expect to make some mistakes along the way.

We all know the story of how Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started Apple in their garage. But what we don't hear about are the failed attempts at businesses that came before Apple.

Embrace these mistakes. View them as powerful learning opportunities that can strengthen your business acumen.
